The ozone treatment of biological oxidation sludge is a technological proposal to minimize the production of excess sludge.
The ozonolysis acts on the growth processes of the activated sludge and on its development, reducing the production of the biomass sent to the sludge line and improving its characteristics of settlement.
The ozonolysis process of the oxidation sludge, in addition to optimizing the management of the sludge line, can lead to improve the quality of the effluents of the biological oxidation process, in terms of suspended solids residues and micropollutants content.

Planned activities within PerFORM WATER 2030

The experimental activities regarding ozonolysis of activated sludge for sludge production minimization are part of the Biosolid valorization research line included in PerFORM WATER 2030. They are closely related to the activities about measurements and modelling for sludge production minimization described .
They include the revamping of the pure oxygen biological oxidation tank located in the San Giuliano Milanese West WWTP (Wastewater treatment plant), combined with a ozonolysis plant.
The ozonolysis treatment is carried out by recirculating the activated sludge in a contact reactor in which the ozone (O3) dosage is realized. The ozone production is carried out by a 2 Kg/h O3 generator.

Objectives and expected results

  • Definition of the most suitable activated carbon for the implementation of the technology.

  • Identification of the optimal operating parameters for the process.

  • Identification of the optimal operating parameters for the process.

Description of the activities

  • Revamping of pure oxygen biological oxidation plant in San Giuliano West WWTP: structural restoration, installation of oxygenation/mixing system, preparation of automatic control and operation system.

  • Installation, testing, start-up and operation of the ozonolysis plant, with monitoring of the operating parameters of the biological plant with different ozone dosages, in order to verify / optimize the performance in sludge production and effluent quality.

  • Execution of ozonolysis laboratory-scale specific tests for preliminary definition of useful ozone dosages. Microscopic analysis of the morphological-structural characteristics of the activated sludge.

  • Collection and processing data for process modeling purposes.

Pilot site

The experimental activities will be located at San Giuliano Milanese West WWTP (Wastewater treatment plant) operated by CAP Group.

Partners involved

S.I.A.D. S.p.A. re-activates and operates the pure oxygen activated sludge plant thanks to CAP Group support.
CAP Group makes available the pure oxygen oxidation tank of San Giuliano West WWTP, preparing the plant-structural adjustments and the electrical-hydraulic connections.
DICA-AMB Department of Politecnico di Milano support the plant design and provides scientific support. POLIMI DICA-AMB also develops the modeling of the whole process.
IRSA-CNR conducts micropollutant analysis of inlet and outlet of the oxidation plant; IRSA-CNR conducts also analysis of the activated sludge.
